What was your favorite project(s) during the semester? Please explain why.

My favorite projects that I have created during the semester was the logo and video story project. I enjoyed creating a logo with the intentions of it being used for a site logo of this blog (which I have now added). It was really fun being creative and working with my favorite program (Adobe Illustrator). I also really enjoyed filming and creating a video on the topic of fashion. Adobe Premiere Pro is another one of my favorites, and I enjoyed editing and putting clips together from something I filmed. I’ve always got a lot of fashion inspiration from YouTuber’s like “bestdressed“, and I was excited to create a video of my own with those inspirations. It was my first time filming and creating a video entirely of my own.

What skills did you learn in the course that you believe you will use in the future?

Skills that I have learned in this course were similar to those I have learned back in DTC 201 which I took in Fall 2018. I got to use the skills I learned with Adobe programs, and learn a little more in COM210 by exploring more tools. I enjoyed how I had more creative freedom and could communicate the topic of my choice that we stuck to all semester long. I learned how to use different methods of media (visual, audio, video) to communicate my chosen topic of fashion. I don’t think that I will be using any of these skills in the future, as I want to pursue dentistry. But I do believe that the skills I learned can be valuable if ever needed in the future.

What coursework or career path do you see in your future? What skills or projects from this class may be influential in your chosen career path?

I don’t think I will be having any more coursework in the future that will involve creating media projects, but I do think it could possibly helpful in the future if I own my own practice in dentistry and want to create media content for it.

Is there any skill that you wished you would have learned in this course that you did not learn? If yes, what skill is that?

I don’t think there are any additional skills that I have wished to learn in this course that I did not.

Did you find any websites or resources from outside the class material that were especially useful?

Websites like SoundCloud were useful to me when finding background music for the audio and video projects that were not copyrighted and under the Creative Commons License. I used the filter on SoundCloud to find music with a Creative Commons License that I could download and use for my projects, and stumbled across LAKEY INSPIRED who creates some music for non-copyrighted use.

Idea and Inspiration

For my video story project, I was inspired by many fashion YouTuber’s who do hauls, lookbooks, and outfit ideas for different seasons. I decided to do a casual summer outfits lookbook of outfits I wear in the summer that are casual for going out in. As I know, everybody has their own individual style so these outfits may not look like a great option to everyone watching, but my hopes were to give some sort of inspiration with these different styles.

Design Process

By watching a lot of different YouTuber’s with different shooting and editing styles, I was inspired to create this video combining the elements that I found to be visually pleasing. I did not include an audio of me talking or voicing over any of the outfits. I did this because I wanted to leave space for viewers to have thoughts of their own when viewing these outfits. I did add background music to the entire video to prevent any awkward silence.

I was very inspired to try out the frame around (certain) clips by layering the clip over the solid pink background/another video and then scaling down the clip in front in order for the background to frame itself. I also did the layering clip with other backgrounds I filmed with the dried plant and the curtains. I thought it added a cute touch and created more texture to the video. I also tried to match the beat of the music to the clips. I purposely did jump cuts instead of smooth transitions because it seemed to look much better this way. I also left a black blank space between the outfits and the clip where I entered the car. This was intentionally done, as I wanted to create a “pause”. I also added texts for each outfit in the upper right corner.

I received feedback’s from classmates who suggested a “dip-to-black” transition at the end of the video for a more smooth ending, which I added for my final draft. I faded out the music towards the end as well. Another feedback was that the blinds/lighting was distracting, but I ended up still liking the blinds as it added texture and highlights to the clothes. I tried filming in a solid lighting and didn’t like it as much so I kept the original clips.

Technical Detail

This video was shot on my Samsung S9 with the front camera, and edited on Adobe Premiere Pro. I positioned my phone on top of a tall drawer so that it was at a good angle. I found it hard trying to find a good place to film where I could position my phone onto something high enough, and had good lighting. Thankfully, I had an extra room in the house that was empty, and had bright sunlight shining through in the evening time. I think that the shadow of the blinds adding a nice texture to the video and highlight and shadows to the clothes.

I created many jump cuts of different angles of each outfit. I also sped up a few clips to 200% or 250% that I wanted to include, but seemed too slow. A fading out transition for the clip and audio was added to the end of the video for a smoother ending. I did not add transitions anywhere else in the video as it may have been too much and become “cheesy”. The layered clips where done by layering a background clip under the clip I wanted to use, and scaling down the front clip to 91.9%

I did run into an issue where I kept getting the red screen popping up here and there throughout the video when I was editing (and after exporting). I looked up ways to fix it and none of them seemed to work. All the files were in the correct places and folders, so I’m not sure what was causing the problem.

Idea and Inspiration

My inspiration to create this audio story was the topic of fast fashion. I talk about fast fashion a lot on this blog, as you may have noticed if you see my blog posts and assignments often. The reason for this is because it is an important topic related to fashion. In this audio story, I have decided to briefly talk about fast fashion and why it is bad for the environment, and how come no one is doing anything about it.

Design Process

I decided to make this audio more informative, than a personal story. What I initially did was research a little about fast fashion and write down a few things that I wanted to include when I record. I wanted to talk about what it is, how it has an impact, and why it’s still a big thing in fashion even though it is not good for us or the environment. I found a cash register sound to add in the background of my recording when it came to the part where I talked about the cost. I wanted more emphasize on that section of why people may not be shopping at sustainable brands.

Technical Detail

I recorded the audio through my laptop using a voice recorder through the headphone mic. The recorded audio ended up being too quiet in comparison to the music so I had to adjust the volumes to my audio as well as the background music. Taking feedback from classmates, I did re-record my audio and adjusted the volume slightly. I also did not include so many pauses in the audio and layered the cashier sound under my voice rather than having a huge emphasis with the pauses. At the end, I added a little fade in and fade out to the music for the beginning and ends of the audio.

Idea and Inspiration

My inspiration to create this audio story was the topic of fast fashion. I talk about fast fashion a lot on this blog, as you may have noticed if you see my blog posts and assignments often. The reason for this is because it is an important topic related to fashion.

I decided to make this audio more informative, than a personal story. I did want to add a little bit of a personal story relating to fast fashion to the end of the audio but did not know if I had enough time to do it in 2 minutes.

What I initially did was research a little about fast fashion and write down phrases that I wanted to include when I record. I wanted to talk about what it is, how it has an impact, a few examples of it, and also a solution to it. I ended up thinking I wasn’t going to have enough time so I stopped at “in the end it is our job to be mindful consumers”. I think talking about how a sustainable brand like “Reformation” may not be affordable, then not talking about solutions to “being a mindful consumer” did not go well. For the final draft I am considering recording another little bit about tips to be a mindful consumer in fast fashion.

Technical Detail

Hi, here are my raw audios that I will be using for the audio story project.

Idea and Inspiration

For this project, I wanted to create a site logo for my blog. Site logos are generally small, so I figured something simple but with a purpose would be the best way to go for this. I also really wanted to go for a “hand-written” font after creating the logo rough draft, which I didn’t like so much. I preferred my handwriting from the sketch of my logo more than the fonts I used.

Design and Process

What influenced me to design this logo was the name I chose for my blog. I figured a simple wired coat hanger would be a great way to incorporate my name into the hanger. Another small thing that influenced me is my passion for dentistry (in this case, orthodontics). I specifically chose a wire hanger to incorporate my name because of how wires are bent in many shapes in orthodontics for braces. I wanted to make it so that the wires were bent in the shape of my name.

The rough draft did not turn out as expected and I did not like the font that I used. I also couldn’t find a good font that was close to my handwritten sketch. I received a feedback that suggested I take a picture and trace over the sketch logo, which I ended up doing. But, I did receive another good feedback with a link to a font recommendation that they thought was close to my handwriting, but I did not get the chance to try it out as I did not see the reply until a few days after of finalizing my logo. I think the tracing over the sketch logo was a good alternative option since I could not find a good font in time. It gave the logo a more “natural” look, and I kept the logo clean and simple by getting rid of the gradient circle background.

Technical Detail

I took the photo of my logo sketch and used the pen tool to trace over every individual letter of the word “Hannah’s” and “closet” so that they were all separate letters. I then traced the coat hanger only on the left half and duplicated it and reflected it to get the symmetry on the right side. Then I selected all the individual letters of each word and lined it up using the align tool. I re-shaped each letter and fixed up all the ends to connect, then grouped it all together with the hanger.
